Do we make a home or does a home make us?

In the second issue celebrating Paul Archer Design’s 25th anniversary, we’re looking at ‘Spaces for Making’ and the many ways a home can inspire us to lead more creative lives.

Working in a tailor-made space is not only vital for those who use their homes professionally to sculpt, cook, paint, photograph or compose. The right environment can ignite moments of creative joy in all of us – getting crafty with the kids at the kitchen table, nurturing plants in the garden, or simply relishing the daily act of making coffee.

With space at a premium for many, designing in the potential for creativity can seem a luxury. The modern home has more demands on it than ever, as places to live, work, entertain, and retreat to. Home is also where we make time for ourselves and our personal passions. A great architect can listen to a client and draw out the ways, however small, that things can be done differently. It’s this expanded vision that allows for a home to shift with different modes of use, helping us transition between the moments of our day but also our phases of life.

While speaking to the Paul Archer Design team another type of making revealed itself – the making of memories. Our homes set the scene for much of our lives, the major milestones and all the blink-and-you’ll-miss-them types in between. A young team member told me about growing up in a home by Paul Archer Design. It left such an impres- sion on her that she was inspired to go on and study architecture, later joining the practice. What better example than that, of how a home has the power to shape us into who we are.
